Take easy hike/run (or a hard one!) in Henry Cowell's amazing redwood grove! Dave grew up visiting family in Felton and hiking in Henry Cowell. And he and Meg have done many runs through the denser forested paths in the park.
A few trails we love:
~1 mile loop, the easiest way to see big, big trees! : https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/redwood-grove-loop-trail--2
~3-4 miles, great views from the observation tower (and no park entrance fee if you start from this trailhead): https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/powder-mill-pine-ridge-fire-road-and-pipeline-road-loop?sh=xnuer6
~7-8 miles, see it all! : https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/redwoods-reborn-fall-creek?sh=xnuer6
December through March is elephant seal pupping season! Año Nuevo is a beautiful place to see the elephant seals up close through a guided tours (~2.5 hours, 3- miles walk). Online reservation highly recommended but not required (walk-ups possible too if it's not crowded).
Hit one of the many beaches in Santa Cruz! Natural Bridges and Twin Lakes are our favorites.
A few faves in the mountains along Hwy 9:
-- Sawmill Restaurant & Alehouse (Boulder Creek): cozy historic spot for burgers, beers & great live music most nights!
--Aroma (Ben Lomond): a little spendy, but people tell us it's the best food in the San Lorenzo Valley. Great outdoor patio seating.
--Wild Roots (Boulder Creek & Felton): organic grocery with a rad deli for breakfast and lunch.
In Santa Cruz, our faves:
--Charlie Hong Kong: the freshest organic noodle bowls and soups you'll ever have for a casual dinner or lunch.
--Seabright Social: good beers and plates for dinner or lunch, convenient choice for groups post- Twin Lakes Beach on Fri.
--Steamer Lane Supply: great coffee, breakfast tacos & burritos with an ocean view.
--Linda's Seabreeze Cafe: classic diner for breakfast & lunch, don't sleep on the cinnamon rolls.
We are so in love with the Bay Area and hope you get the chance to explore beyond Boulder Creek & Santa Cruz, if you have the extra days. A few ideas:
